A new study has revealed that artificial intelligence can figure out your passwords simply by listening to your keystrokes. This startling finding comes from researchers at Durham University in the UK, led by Joshua Harrison. They conducted an experiment using a popular 16-inch MacBook Pro laptop and an AI system that listened to keystrokes to learn the distinct sound of each letter pressed.
The results stunned even the researchers themselves. “The AI model we created and trained was able to identify keystrokes recorded on a phone near the laptop with 95% accuracy,” explained Harrison. “That’s similar to someone sitting next to you at a coffee shop.”
While concerning, Harrison cautions that this doesn’t necessarily mean we should panic yet. There are already common sense ways people protect themselves without even realizing it. “When you opened your computer today, you probably unlocked it with a fingerprint instead of typing a password. It’s the same with your phone and facial recognition,” he points out.
The release of this report coincides with growing concerns over AI’s rapid advancement. This week, tech industry leaders met behind closed doors with senators to discuss safeguards for the technology. Both Congress and the White House have been pressuring tech companies to implement principles and policies to prevent misuse of AI.
“Having guidelines in place for things like altered deepfake videos is wise proactive thinking,” said former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff. “It’s better to establish requirements now rather than wait until a real problem emerges.”
While AI offers exciting potential, this technology also comes with risks if not developed thoughtfully. The Durham researchers’ work acts as an important reminder that AI can be exploited if protections are not built in from the start. Their findings also reinforce the need for continuous oversight as AI capabilities evolve.
Moving forward, tech experts emphasize the importance of keeping humans involved in the development process. “AI should empower people, not replace them,” argues Sue Smith, an AI ethicist. “Having people work closely with machines ensures solutions that take the complexity of human values into account.”
